New executive director for Sunnyside Foundation
The Sunnyside Foundation has appointed Diane Bissell as the Foundation’s new Executive Director. An active supporter of many organizations that benefit youth and minorities, she is a long-time friend of the Sunnyside Unified School District and was inducted into the inaugural Sunnyside School District Alumni Association Hall of Fame in 2004.
Ms. Bissell was employed at Raytheon Missile Systems for 27 years in various capacities, retiring in 2005 as Senior Manager of Community Relations and Charitable Giving. She brings to the Foundation a track record as a no-nonsense, articulate professional who excels in building partnerships that benefit the entire community.
Ms. Bissell’s service on advisory boards and boards of directors includes serving as Chair of Chicanos por la Causa Board of Directors, Board Advisor to the Tucson Hispanic Chamber Board of Directors, and member of the Sunnyside Foundation Board of Directors. She also led the Tucson Chapter of Executive Women International (EWI).
Ms. Bissell has been honored by the Tucson community for her work in education and outreach to minorities and women. She has received the 2001 YWCA Woman on the Move award, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Community Service Award for the past five years, a Sam Walton Business Leader Award, and the Educational Enrichment Foundation’s Ray Davies Humanitarian Award.
Ms. Bissell holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a master’s degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. She is a ’97 graduate of Greater Tucson Leadership. She grew up in western Massachusetts and moved to Tucson in 1977. Ms. Bissell has two adult children who also reside in Tucson.
The Sunnyside Foundation
The Sunnyside Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides financial support for innovative classroom projects, educational materials, extracurricular activities and literacy programs for students in the Sunnyside Unified School District. Its goal is to supplement the traditional education experience in ways that maximize the effectiveness of teachers and result in enhanced student experiences and achievement. The Foundation, which was established in 1996, has awarded more than $450,000 for Excellence in Education Mini-Grants to enrich academic and extracurricular experiences. In addition, the Foundation is more than half-way toward achieving its goal of establishing a $1 million endowment fund.

These students were signing folks up for “Green Projects” and Diane signed up for changing her light bulbs for a year. They are laughing because they described the bulbs as “curly fries” and she asked them to “stop” as she was hungry!
